Censorship
Many people who know me well, will know that censorship is something I have very strong opinions about. First off, let's define censorship per Wikipedia:"Censorship is defined as the removal and/or withholding of information from the public by a controlling group or body." Source: WikipediaThat doesn't really sum up what I want to talk about, rather it sums up the general meaning of the term "censorship". What I want to talk about is this:
"Censorship is closely related to the concepts of freedom of speech and freedom of expression. When overused, it is often associated with human rights abuse, dictatorship, and repression." Source: WikipediaThis is something I see too much of today. I'm not a huge fan of the "justice" system in general, but my human rights are something I will never take for granted. I demand respect and fair treatment from those around me. I do not infringe upon anyone else's rights. And yet I feel my rights are being violated every day. Look, everyone, this is what you're missing out on:
"Article 19. Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." Source: Universal Declaration of Human RightsYet people are being coerced into believing the endless amounts of propaganda that the media spews out. These "liberal" fascists are forcing all their ideas onto everyone else. But they're clever about it: they make it socially unacceptable to do/say certain things, so everyone feels pressured into suppressing thoughts and feelings that are "taboo". Then you're faced with a decision: follow the herd or become a social outcast. What can you do? Take this example. Ridiculous or what? Even most people I've spoken to think it's political correctness gone mad. Now what, I can't even wear a t-shirt with something "offensive" on it? What would society be without varied opinions? What would humanity be without conflict and differences? What would your conscience be without the chance to argue and reason, and thrive on new ideas? Why are we being forced into thinking the same way? Oh right, so the world would be an absolutely wonderful and perfect place if everybody thought the same, would it? No. We would all be bored. No drama, no new scientific theories, no new inventions, no new ideas. Humanity would be stuck. Think about it. All those people who "thought crazy", and actually made a difference. They are the people who pushed the barriers, who saw no limits, and yet they saw everything that other people didn't. The world is no perfect place. It never will be. There is no point sugar coating and cotton-wool-ing everything. I see it all too often: when someone finds something offensive, they just sit there and whinge about it, and how terrible the world is. If you find something offensive, why don't you get out there with some intelligence and challenge it? Why not put new ideas forward? Why not share how you think about it? Why not learn to use your brain for something productive, rather than destroying every last fiber of your being getting upset over it? Grow up, life is life. Respect my right to freedom of speech, and I will respect yours. Don't try to silence people just because they hold different ideas about the world. Since when did silence get you anywhere?
